A Message From Our DOM

People say there are several reasons why they do not attend church.  The top 5 reasons are the following from a Barna survey:

  1. 1.No time; schedule conflicts; working

  2. 2.Not interested; nothing to offer; no reason

  3. 3.My beliefs are different than the church’s

  4. 4.Don’t believe in organized religion; don’t need to worship at a church

  5. 5.Don’t know

Do you know that 82% of un-churched people say they would attend church if they were invited by a friend? Americans say they are more spiritual now than they have been in many years, yet many are not connected to a church on a regular basis, and they do not want to discuss “religion”.  We must learn that winning people to the Lord begins with building relationships.  So, they don’t want to discuss religion, tell them about the Pinewood Derby, Vacation Bible School, All State Youth Choir, church concerts, baseball games, fish fries, World Changers, Mission Spectacular, Children and Youth camp (of course not all at the same time) or just talk about things neighbors and friends talk about.  Over time they will come to know that “church people” are OK, even normal.  It takes time to build trusting relationships.  From time to time we all experience crisis in life.  Earn the right to share Christ with your friend in his or her time of need.

Our vacation bible school was awesome!!!!!!! We had 87 children enrolled, and 35 church staff helping. We had 3 professions of faith, which is the best part of all. Sunday on Family Day we had 176 people in attendance. The kids performed & we had a "Showdeo". Afterwards we ate, the kids had a huge waterslide to play on, and we had cotton candy and snow cones for dessert. It was a great time and the kids learned if they have questions they can turn to God for the answers. It truly was a blessed week at Raymond Baptist Church.

CHURCH STRENGTHENING NOTES

PRAYER WALKING

Part One

I once thought of Prayer Walking as an activity that could be done by any Christian who could pray and walk.  I changed my mind on those requirements as for the past two summers I had the honor of pushing John Gudgel’s wheelchair through the streets of Waverly and Pleasant Plains as we Prayer Walked together.  I now know that the only requirement is the ability to pray, something any and every Christian can do.  It requires no special abilities or training.  You can Prayer Walk.

I do have some suggestions on how to be effective in your Prayer Walking.  Most of us usually pray with our eyes shut.  Effective Prayer Walking is performed with your eyes WIDE open.  Notice the homes where you walk and pray.  What you see can let you know more about the lifestyles, the interests, and the needs of the families in those homes.  Toys indicate children/grandchildren in the home.  Sports equipment, camping gear, boats, and gardens indicate interests of the people.  You will see signs of affluence and signs of poverty.  You might also see some of the people, which leads to my second suggestion.

Be willing to interact with people.  Let them know who you are and what you are doing.  Most people are very open to prayer and very appreciative of someone caring enough to pray for them and their neighbors.  You can even ask those you meet if they have needs for which you could pray.  This can be a start to building relationships with people.

I strongly suggest that you constantly acknowledge that Prayer Walking is a God-centered activity.  God loves each person living in the homes where you walk.  He is already at work in their lives.  You willingness to Prayer Walk gives you the awesome privilege and tremendous opportunity to join in His work.

God desires your availability more than your ability.  Are you willing to join in God’s work by Prayer Walking?

The 22nd Annual Tour De Donut bicycle race was held on Saturday, July 10th.  It is a 32 ½ mile race that runs on Route 4 in front of the Bethel Southern Baptist Church in Staunton.  Pastor Chester Keene used this opportunity to minister to the riders by handing out nearly 600 bottles of water as they came by the church.  He had 10 volunteers assisting him, who were mostly members of his church.  The Association was involved by providing some of the cases of water.  The bike riders showed great appreciation to the church for their ministry to them.  The overall winning time for the race was 1 hour 16 minutes and 35 seconds.  You can go to the official web-site to view the final race results.  www.bikeclub.com/tourdedonut

Bunker Hill Women on Mission hosted a shower for the residents at Angel’s Cove on July 25th.  Women brought items that they have been making and collecting for months to the shower and those items were given to the girls.  Boxes were also packed with summer clothing for the earthquake victims in Chile.  It was very successful.

Please remember that all Annual Church Profiles are due this month.  If your information is not in by the end of August, we cannot guarantee that your church information will be in the Book of Reports.
